Room 11 read the story of Maui and the sun. They then wrote the story in their own words,

Maui and the Sun

The sun was going so fast that they couldn’t eat their food. They put strong rope on the sun. The sun got slow. They could eat.

A long time ago there was a man named Maui. Maui had four brothers. They lived in New Zealand. Maui got very mad with the sun. 

Maui told his brothers. He told them we are going to make a trap. The plan was: they used flax ropes. They found the hole where the sun comes out. They hid behind some rocks. Maui told them that when he says to hold the ropes pull them. The sun came up. They pulled the ropes. The sun yelled and screamed. 

The sun is staying up longer. Now Maui and his brother can go fishing.

A long time ago there was a guy called Maui. He was a Maori person. He had four brothers. The sun was very fast. Too fast actually. 

Maui and his four brothers had a plan. To pull the sun until he goes slowly. So Maui and his brothers hid in a hole. They made a rope and pulled on the sun. The sun thought he was going to die. 

“Keep pulling!” said Maui. The sun was moving many ways until the sun was moving slowly. Then they had time to hunt, eat and fish. It never ever moved fast again.

Maui and the sun were fighting with Maui’s brothers. The sun was about to die because the brothers were pulling the sun too tight.

They lived happily ever after and they got plenty of time to fish and to hunt.

A long long time ago there lived Maui and his brothers. They lived in New Zealand. Maui was eating. The sun went away, Maui was angry at the sun. He was going to do something about it. 

Maui and his brothers found the hole. They put flax rope around the hole. The sun was rising. When sun’s eyes got over the hole they hid. When the sun shone over the mountains and seas they pulled the flax rope! They pulled really tight. The sun whined. 

The sun said “you’re going to kill me!” Maui said “let go he will go slower now.” The end.

“The sun is too fast” said Maui, we must slow the sun down because we don’t get to hunt. 

Maui got a string. On the count of three, tug, now!!! “Let me go!” said sun. “Release sun now” said Maui. The End

We need to make the sun move slower.” In the middle Maui got some ropes and Maui’s brothers hid behind the rocks. Maui said “Now” and they grabbed on to the rope and pulled it. Maui said “help me make the sun go slowly”. Maui’s brothers laughed, “We can’t make the sun go slowly”. Maui said “Yes we can, we can make a flax rope.”

I know we can make that sun go slowly.” “We can’t do that said his brothers” “Yes we can said Maui. “We’ll make flax ropes. When they were done Maui and his brothers hid behind some rocks. When the sun shone over the seas and mountains Maui said “Pull!” and his brothers pulled. The sun said “What are you doing?” in a loud voice, “You will kill me. Can’t you see that I am nearly dead?” “Let go” said Maui. “See he can’t go really fast.” His brothers let go. The sun went slowly across the sky.

When Maui was eating his food the sun went down. Maui’s brothers came and said “That sun goes too fast.” “We have to catch him” said Maui. “We can’t” said his brothers “We can” said Maui. “We will make flax ropes. When he came Maui said “Now” and his brothers pulled. When they let the rope go the sun went slowly across the sky.

Maui didn’t have enough time in the day. So Maui told his brothers “We need more time in the day. We need more time to fish and to eat our food”. So Maui and his brothers tried to stop the sun. They tied ropes and is worked. So they put the ropes on the sun, so that worked too. Then they pulled and pulled! The sun said “you’re killing me” Then Maui said “stop!” Then Maui and his brothers stopped and the sun went slowly again. The end

They were eating their dinner and the sun was going too fast. That was every day. In the morning they hid behind a rock and when the sun came up they grabbed the ropes and caught the sun. The sun said “you are going to kill me.” The sun slowed down.
